WHO Collaborating Centre for Arbovirus and Haemorrhagic Fever Reference and Research

The department of virology at the BNITM houses the WHO Collaborating Centre for Arbovirus and Haemorrhagic Fever Reference and Research (WHOCC).

As a collaborating centre, the BNITM is a key point of contact for the WHO when it comes to detecting rare and hazardous viral diseases. Within this collaboration the WHO will be provided access to Germany’s largest reference collection of rare and tropical virus strains.

The WHOCC offers diagnostics and consulting concerning imported cases of tropical viral diseases. In-house developed diagnostic tests allow for these services. Please note the information on Order Forms & Services and Sample Shipment.

Samples suspected to contain life-threatening pathogens, e.g. haemorrhagic fever viruses, are marked with an asterisk (*) in the order forms and must be announced to the BNITM virologist on duty beforehand via phone (Tel. +49 171 2127900).

Furthermore, the WHOCC supports African, South American and Asian countries to establish own diagnostic laboratories for arboviruses and haemorrhagic fever viruses.
