Informationen for travelers

There are currently warnings against unnecessary tourist trips abroad. They must expect further increasing drastic restrictions on travel, quarantine measures and restrictions on public life. (Source: Auswärtiges Amt, Germany, 03.04.)

Informationen for citizens

Hamburg

  • Hotlines:  Based on the changed situation a hotline has been established in Hamburg to be reached under 428 284 000. The doctor’s call of the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians is available under 116117. In case of concrete suspicion of an infection, he advises by phone and, if necessary, arranges for medical care. In cooperation with the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians in Hamburg, an attempt is being made to expand the capacities.

  • What should I do if I think I'm infected? The most important thing is not to visit the doctor’s surgery or emergency unit, as this could possibly infect other patients. Hamburg residents with relevant symptoms who have recently travelled to affected areas or have had contact with people who may be infected can call their doctor's surgery or the numbers listed above for advice. The Hamburg Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians is currently preparing a concept for people to be tested at home after consulting 116117 in order to avoid further contacts with other people.

  • Hygiene rules: The authority advises to wash hands thoroughly on a regular basis, to follow the rules for coughing and sneezing (in a handkerchief or in the bends of the elbow) and to keep sufficient distance to sick persons and other people. Further information and hygiene tips can be found on the website infektionsschutz.de of the Federal Centre for Health Education (only in German).

Treatment of patients

Recommendations of the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians, Hamburg

  • Procedure (dated from 10/03/2020)

The primary goal must be that all patients suspected of having COVID-19 should first contact their doctor or the Ärztetruf Hamburg (116117) by telephone. Then ask your patients who complain of a respiratory disease whether they have been in a risk area in the past 14 days or have had contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case.

  • Clarification of suspicions (dated from 23/03/2020)

According to the case definition of the RKI, patients who complain of a respiratory disease and who have been in a risk area or have had contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case in the past 14 days are a justified suspect case. If outpatient management is possible, the patient must be released into home quarantine and a sample collection must be carried out or arranged. If the patient is hospitalised, he/she must be immediately referred to the emergency medical services (112) for inpatient admission (advance notice "suspected corona"). Asymptomatic patients who have been in contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case will not be sampled, but must be reported to the responsible public health department (because of possible quarantine orders).

Patients with respiratory symptoms who have been in a region with COVID-19 cases within the last 14 days or who have had contact with unconfirmed cases are a case under differential diagnostic investigation. Risk areas and the RKI case definition and orientation guide can be found at the end of this page.Currently, there is an increasing number of requests from employers who do not allow an employee returning from vacation / business trip to return to work without presenting a negative test result. If the case criteria of the RKI are not met, these are not SHI benefits. These services can only be provided privately or as company medical services by the respective company medical service.Travel returnees from risk areas should be encouraged to voluntarily remain in isolation for 14 days after return, regardless of symptoms. Children are not allowed to attend school or day care during this period.

  • Sample collection (dated from 04/03/2020)

On Youtube you can find a video on sampling for suspected coronavirus by the AGES (Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety GmbH) using a nasopharyngeal/pharyngeal smear. As soon as further training material adapted to Hamburg conditions is available, you will find it here.

  • Report to the public health department (dated from 18/03/2020)

Only report well-founded suspicions to the responsible health office. It is not necessary to report cases under differential diagnostic clarification to the public health department. In the case of a positive laboratory result, the laboratory will report the case to the public health department. All laboratory results are forwarded to the public health department. In the case of a positive result, the laboratory forwards the information to the responsible public health department within half an hour after the test result has been presented, which in turn informs the patient. If the results are negative, the laboratory forwards the results to a central office, which distributes the results to the health authorities responsible for the place of residence. Since 13.03.2020, the health authorities no longer provide patients with information about negative test results by telephone. The patient must contact the health office responsible for his or her place of residence by e-mail and, according to current estimates, will then receive the corresponding feedback by e-mail within 5 to 6 days. Alternatively, the patient can also contact the health office responsible for him/her in writing or by fax. On tools.rki.de/PLZTool/ you find the responsible health office.
