Chagas Hamburg Screening (CHASE)

Chagas disease is a neglected tropical disease caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. The disease is primarily native to the Latin American region where it is usually transmitted by an insect of the Triatominae family. Due to global migration flows, however, many people infected with Chagas disease also live in Europe.  A predominant problem with Chagas disease is that it is not diagnosed in time. As it rarely causes immediate or acute symptoms, most infected people do not know about their condition for decades. Without diagnosis or treatment, however, the consequences of Chagas disease can be very severe. Outside Latin America Chagas disease can be transmitted by blood or blood transfusions, from a mother to her unborn child, or by organ transplants.

The CHASE study (Chagas HAmburg ScrEening) is dedicated to screening, research, prevention and education about Chagas disease in Hamburg. Also, people of Latin American origin living in Hamburg are informed about Chagas disease and offered free diagnosis and treatment at the BNITM. Furthermore, the project strives to bring about change in the prevention policy of this disease for Latin American citizens in Hamburg. The CHASE study is also part of the national network ELCiD (Detection and Control of Chagas Patients in Germany), which is committed to raise the awareness of Chagas disease in the public and among health professionals.
