Basisseminar Reisemedizin 2020

Gemäß Vorstandsbeschluss werden am Bernhard-Nocht-Institut für Tropenmedizin bis Ende 2020 keine Präsenzveranstaltungen angeboten und durchgeführt.

Aus diesem Grund bieten wir das Basisseminar Reisemedizin an beiden geplanten Wochenenden alternativ als interaktives Webinar an. Sie benötigen hierfür lediglich einen Computer mit Mikrophon und ggf. Webcam sowie eine stabile Internetverbindung.

Teil 1: 24.-25.10.2020
Teil 2: 07.-08.11.2020

Der stark auf die Praxis fokussierte Kursus vermittelt die praktische Kompetenz für Reiseprophylaxen wie auch den sicheren Umgang mit reisemedizinischen Erkrankungen. Das Erlernen von alltagstauglichen Strategien in der Reiseberatung und in der Reiserückkehrmedizin bildet den Schwerpunkt unserer Veranstaltung.

Eine gemeinsame Veranstaltung der Sektion Infektiologie und Tropenmedizin des Universitätsklinikums Hamburg-Eppendorf und des Bernhard-Nocht-Instituts für Tropenmedizin.



Well-functioning and sustainable laboratory services are at the basis of strong health systems and crucial for improving public health and research capacities of countries. This is a 2-week intensive course aimed at describing the role of laboratory systems in strengthening health services and research capacity with a special focus on low and middle-income countries (LMIC). The emphasis is on explaining the structure and functions of laboratory systems and their effective and efficient management.  Moreover, areas where laboratory systems overlap and/or complement health systems are being considered. The course uses interactive, simulation-based exercises, as well as practical sessions to complement the theoretical content.

Ortrud Mührer Travel Grants

Grantholders from 2019

Please Note: Information for Travel Grant Applicants:
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, there will be no face-to-face courses/lectures at the BNITM this year. However, courses will be provided online (as videoconferences) and will be adapted to the current condition. Until further notice, Ortrud Muehrer - Travel Grants will only be used to cover the compulsory course fees. We are very much looking forward to your application.

The Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM) awards Ortrud Muehrer-Travel Grants to scientists from low- and middleincome countries for the participation in scientific meetings or training programmes at BNITM. Grants are funded by the “Association of Friends of BNITM” (VdF) - a not-for-profit association - and will cover travel-related expenses.


  • Eligible are graduates, PhD students, and postdocs originating from and working in low- and middle-income countries (as defined by the UN/World Bank) who have successfully applied to attend a scientific meeting or training programme at BNITM.
  • Repeated applications are possible but priority will be given to applicants with no successful previous applications. Re-applicants are requested to submit a new application form.


  • Successful applicants will receive up to € 2,000 for travel and accommodation costs to attend a scientific meeting or training programme at BNITM.
  • Expenses covered by the grant will be:

    • Economy airfare (to and from Hamburg)
    • Visa fees
    • Accommodation costs for the duration of the scientific programme (per diems cannot be granted)
    • Participation fees


  • Application

    • Please download and fill in the electronic “Application Form for the Ortrud Muehrer-Travel Grant” and submit all documents requested in the form online to vdf@bnitm.de.
    • Please indicate your successful application to attend a scientific meeting or training programme at BNITM by including reference to a ‘Letter of Acceptance’, signed by a BNITM programme coordinator.

  • Application deadlines are 4 months prior to the start of the scientific meeting or training programme you have been accepted to attend.
  • Selection process: The selection of successful applicants will be based on reviews of the application forms. These will, firstly, be examined by the programme coordinators to meet formal requirements and, secondly, reviewed by an external scientist and the BNITM Chairman of the Board for their contents. Upon final selection, confirmation letters will be sent to the successful candidates by the programme coordinators via email.
  • Reimbursement

    • Payments on account are possible upon submission of a formal invoice.
    • Upon arrival at BNITM, please document all travel related costs on the "Reimbursement Form of the Ortrud Muehrer-Travel Grant” and submit all original receipts.
    • Applicants must state on the reimbursement form if they have successfully secured any additional funding for the expenses applied for through the Ortrud Muehrer-Travel Grant and delineate point-by-point the amounts received for the various expenses. In such cases, payments on account must possibly be repaid.
    • Reimbursement will take place at BNITM.
    • Please note that the maximum sum of reimbursement will be € 2,000; even if eligible, no expenses exceeding this amount can be reimbursed.

Global-Partnership-Initiated-Biosecurity-Academia for Controlling Health Threats (GIBACHT)

GIBACHT is an educational programme established and supported by the German Federal Foreign
Office. The training programme focuses on threats and risks conferred by biological agents and
bioweapons and their successful prevention and control. The programme is offered and responsibly
conducted by two German institutes, the Robert Koch Institute in Berlin and the Bernhard Nocht
Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg, as well as the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute in
Basel, Switzerland, and the African Field Epidemiology Network in Kampala, Uganda.

Epidemiology provides important tools for the assessment and response to health threats in populations. This is a 3-week intensive course on the principles and methods of field epidemiology and the way these inform the control of infectious diseases in outbreak settings. The course uses interactive, simulation-based exercises, epidemiological case studies, laboratory- and computer-based practical sessions to complement the theoretical content.
