LCI Summer School on “The Bright Side of Infections - Understanding Infection at the single cell level”
From July 1st to 3rd, 2025, This year's LCI Summer School took place at the „Jugend-, Freizeit- und Bildungsstätte Koppelsberg“ in Plön - right on the shore of Lake Plön and in midsummer temperatures of up to 35 degrees. A total of 74 doctoral students from the three Leibniz Institutes Research Center Borstel, Leibniz Lung Center (FZB), Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM) and Leibniz Institute of Virology (LIV) came together to network and exchange ideas as part of the Leibniz Center Infection (LCI) Graduate School.

The program once again featured a successful mix of scientific content and diverse social acitivties. In addition to exciting lectures and an inspiring keynote speech by Prof. Emmanuel Saliba from the Institute of Molecular Infection Biology (IMIB) in Würzburg on single-cell analyses in infection research, formats such as Science Speed Dating and Speed Talks ensured intensive and engaging discussions.
A significant part of the scientific program was shaped by the doctoral students, who presented their research projects in short talks and poster sessions and thus actively contributed to the scientific exchange. Prizes were awarded in the categories “Best Talk” and “Best Poster” for the best contributions by young researchers.

Award winners were:
Maisha Adiba (LIV) – 1st Place, Best Talk
Mia Le (BNITM) – 2nd Place, Best Talk
Moumita Sengupta (BNITM) – 3rd Place, Best Talk
Jędrzej Mazur (LIV) – Best Poster
The winners received certificates and book vouchers from Thalia.
In addition to the scientific program, there was also plenty of opportunity for personal exchange and interaction: swimming in Lake Plön, a large BBQ, games, karaoke and a relaxed get-together provided ample opportunity for discussions and networking in a relaxed atmosphere.

The event was largely organized by Silke Luckow (FZB), who also acted as the central contact person for planning and communication. She was supported on site by Marina Rolf (BNITM) and Skadi Lange (LIV). PD Norbert Reiling, Dr. Bianca Schneider and and Prof. Silke Meiners from the Research Center Borstel, Leibniz Lung Center were responsible for the scientific organization.
