WHO Collaborating Center

The logo of the WHO is shown on a white background. A staff of Asclepius in front of a world map with a blue wreath. Next to it in blue letters is the WHO Collaborating Centre for Arbovirus and Haemorrhagic Fever Reference and Research.

The Department of Virology at BNITM hosts the WHO Collaborating Centre for Arbovirus and Haemorrhagic Fever Reference and Research (WHOCC).

As a cooperation center, the Department of Virology at BNITM is an important contact for the WHO for the detection of rare and dangerous viral diseases. Within the cooperation, the WHO has access to the largest reference collection in Germany with around 200 rare and tropical virus strains.

The WHOCC offers diagnostics and advice on imported cases of tropical viral diseases throughout Europe. Another focus of the WHOCC's work is to support African, South American and Asian countries in setting up their own diagnostic laboratories for arboviruses and hemorrhagic fever viruses.
