The Board of Directors is the institute's central governing body and is responsible for strategic, scientific, and administrative management. It consists of three scientific members and the managing director. The Board of Directors usually meets weekly to discuss current developments and make key decisions on the direction and further development of the institute.

Each member of the Board of Directors has a deputy who represents him or her in his or her absence. To ensure that the deputies are involved and informed, the Board of Directors always meets with all available members and deputy members. All scientific sections of the institute are represented in this extended Board of Directors.

The Scientific Advisory Board advises the Board of Directors on matters of strategic direction and scientific quality. The board consists of internationally recognized researchers from various relevant disciplines and meets once a year. It audits research activities, makes recommendations for the further development of scientific priorities, and contributes to continuously ensuring and strengthening the excellence and relevance of research at BNITM.

The Board of Trustees is the institute's supervisory body and supports its strategic development. It is composed of representatives of our funding bodies – the Hamburg Ministry of Science and the Federal Ministry of Health – and our employees, as well as external experts and the chair of the Scientific Advisory Board. The Board of Trustees usually meets twice a year. It decides on fundamental personnel, financial, and strategic matters. With its overarching perspective, the Board of Trustees supports the Board of Directors in the responsible management of the institute.
