The Circle of Friends
The Circle of Friends of the BNITM, the ‘Association of Friends of the Tropical Institute Hamburg e.V.’ (VdF), was founded in 1921 by wealthy citizens of Hamburg to save the institute, which was no longer receiving state funding after the loss of the German colonies.

Today, the Friends' Association is financed by membership fees, donations, bequests and capital market gains. It is registered in the Hamburg Register of Associations under No. VR 4452 and is audited annually by the tax office and recognised as a non-profit organisation.
The purpose and organisation of the Friends' Association are laid down in the association's statutes. The purpose is to support the BNITM, which is currently achieved through funding programmes that the institute finds difficult or impossible to finance on the basis of its statutes. Currently, the activities of the Friends' Association focus on scholarships for doctoral students at the BNITM and for young scientists from low-income countries. These are closely coordinated with the institute's management.
The association is organised around two bodies: the general meeting, which convenes once a year and makes all decisions of fundamental importance, and an honorary board, which is elected every three years by the general meeting and manages the association's affairs.
The current members of the Executive Board are:
Manfred Schüller, Chairman
Former partner, Nordpol+ Agency for Communication
Prof. Dr. Rolf Horstmann, Deputy Chairman
Former Chairman of the BNITM
Dr. Thomas Fenner, Treasurer and Secretary
Labor Dr. Fenner & Kollegen
Prof. Dr. Jürgen Althans
Dr. Althans - Consulting & Coaching
Dr. Katja Barth
Christian Albrecht University of Kiel
Following the annual general meeting, which takes place at the end of June to coincide with the completion of the three-month diploma course, the Friends' Association hosts a summer party in the Institute's garden. In conjunction with the alumni network and the course graduation ceremony, members of the Friends Association, current and former employees of the Institute, and newly qualified tropical medicine specialists can get to know each other and engage in informal conversation. The party is financed by earmarked donations, and the Friends Association serves exclusively to further the objectives set out in its statutes.
