LCI Summer School in Plön
For the first time since the beginning of the corona pandemic, the Summer School of the Leibniz Center Infection (LCI) took place again on site. On the topic of Perspectives in Infection and Inflammation, PhD students from the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM), the Research Center Borstel, Leibniz Lung Center (FZB) and the Leibniz Institute of Virology (LIV) got together for a two-and-a-half-day meeting to exchange ideas on current topics in infection biology.
The annual LCI Summer School is a joint event of all three institutes involved in the LCI Graduate School. It aims to promote the networking of the PhD students, to broaden their horizons in infectiology and to make them exchange ideas regarding their different main topics. The varied programme took place from 2 to 5 May in Plön. It ranged from scientific lectures to poster presentations, speed talks and a workshop. In the evening, there was a barbecue for a relaxed exchange between the PhD students and the lecturers.
Around 110 participants made use of the Summer School and had a lively exchange. The excellently prepared posters and science slam-like short presentations offered many discussion topics about the respective research work. In addition, experienced researchers from the three LCI institutes presented their research in talks.
The keynote lecture was given by Björn Corleis from the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut (FLI). He reported on the latest findings on protective immune reactions in natural hosts. A so-called Hot Topic Lecture invited to change perspectives: Renate Hartwig from the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) spoke from the perspective of a development economist about the social dilemmas of climate change and antibiotic resistance. In the workshop groups, the participants of the Summer School had to become active themselves once again - together they solved the case study "A virus goes global" prepared for them.
At the end of the event, this year's organisers of the FZB chose the three best short presentations and the best poster, which were rewarded with prizes and much applause:
1st prize: Barbara Honecker, BNITM
2nd prize: Sigurður Þorkelsson, LIV
3rd prize: Vidhisha Sonawane, FZB
Poster prize: Celina Prosch, FZB
