Facts and figures for Germany
In the Federal Republic of Germany, the number of laboratory animals has remained stable in recent years, despite a steady increase in research activity. Mice are the most commonly used animals in laboratory experiments. The slight decline in the number of laboratory animals in 2022 is attributable to exceptional circumstances resulting from the coronavirus pandemic worldwide.

BNITM Facts and Figures
In our animal-based research, we use only rodents, of which mice are the most common. The ‘other rodents’ refer to the African rodent Mastomys natalensis (Natal multimammate mouse), which is the natural reservoir host of the Lassa virus.
