Information and advice for physicians

The Institute's Central Laboratory Diagnostics offers consultations and diagnostic services for clinically and diagnostically active physicians nationwide. The laboratory diagnostics is accredited according to DIN ISO 15189. Services for patients with statutory health insurance are provided by the Institute's Medical Care Centre (MVZ).

The Institute hosts the National Reference Centre for Tropical Pathogens for special examinations and the WHO Collaborating Centre for Arboviruses and Haemorrhagic Fever Viruses in its virology department.  Laboratory Diagnostics is a member of the European Network for the Diagnosis of Imported Viral Diseases (Emerging Viral Diseases-Expert Laboratory Network (EVD-LabNet)) and the National Laboratory Network for Diagnostics of BT Agents (NaLaDiBA).

A broad spectrum of direct and indirect detection methods for viruses, bacteria and parasites is offered for the diagnosis of infectious diseases. These include, for example, antibody diagnostics (serology), special cultivation methods and PCR from various examination materials including formalin-fixed tissue samples. Cultural detection methods for bacteria and fungi are NOT established at the institute. Close cooperation with in-house research groups promotes the further development of diagnostic methods and their evaluation for introduction into routine diagnostics.
