Modern techniques

Modern techniques in clinical trials bring new insights into tropical diseases.

Infections are a major cause of illness and death worldwide. Particularly in countries of the Global South, they can lead to disability, stigmatisation and poverty. We strive to make a significant contribution to combating and controlling infections through our research. In order to achieve this goal, we hold the people as the focus of our research and regularly adapt our research strategy to new technological developments.

In this we apply a two-pronged approach, utilising the latest innovative technologies to investigate infections and immune responses in humans, while also maintaining a focus on the environmental and social conditions as important factors for global well-being.

Excellent research

The BNITM is dedicated to qualified research in tropical and infectious disease medicine - supported by teaching, training, consulting and care. The central building blocks of our success are cooperation, an integrative approach and regular quality controls. We continuously optimize infrastructure, systems and processes and keep bureaucracy lean and flexible.

Sharing and applying knowledge

Our research results are public, transparent and accessible free of charge. We promote exchange with industry in order to apply knowledge in a meaningful way. Through comprehensible communication, participation in public discussions and open events, we make science tangible - in awareness of our history and responsibility.

Supporting employees and students

We support employees through further training, individual support and suitable framework conditions. We prepare students and early career researchers specifically for their careers. We reflect on leadership, support the compatibility of career and family and stand for equality, diversity and internationalization - convinced that diversity strengthens science and society.

Setting ethical standards

Our research is intended exclusively for humane and peaceful purposes. We therefore safeguard ourselves against the misuse of our research. We also fully respect the rights of countries and patients to their biological resources. We avoid or minimize the negative effects of our research on people, society and the environment. In our work, we are committed to

Achieving goals together

Our goal is relevant and excellent research. We rely on trusting partnerships with national and international institutions and promote sustainable success. We strengthen the research environment in Hamburg, recruit excellent scientists and create additional infrastructures. Through a global alumni network, we increase the visibility of the BNITM and promote collaboration within the institute.

Strategy in flux

We conduct research in a rapidly changing world. Population development, climate change and technological progress have a significant and lasting impact on our work. Regular adjustments to our research strategy are therefore essential if we are to continue to pursue our goals successfully.

Global health is a essential basis for economic development, social justice and peace. This knowledge spurs us on.
