Conference Themes 2024

The neglected tropical disease schistosomiasis remains a major public health problem in Madagascar perpetuating a vicious cycle of illness and poverty. Chronic long-term consequences of the disease, such as female genital schistosomiasis and liver fibrosis, can lead to high burden disabilities. The prevalence of the disease remains over 50% in most parts of the country and almost 10 million people are in need of treatment. Besides the population targeted through mass drug administration campaigns, there are challenges for the treatment of other populations in need. The population is overall aware of the existence and transmission routes of the disease, nevertheless preventive measures still are hard to implement.

Still integration strategies into national policies and guidelines need to be discussed timely in order to favour the quick integration of new treatment in the country, as well as targeted prevention strategies, inclusive and integrated diagnostic solutions.

In this second Malagasy conference on schistosomiasis, we want to fuel the discussion and strengthen the networks between Malagasy stakeholders and policy makers, international experts, health professionals and scientist to work together to reach equity through elimination.
