Department of Virology

Overview
Research of the Department of Virology is focussed on molecular aspects of the life cycle, the virus-host cell interaction, and the pathogenesis of tropical viruses. Two groups of viruses with particular relevance for tropical countries are being investigated: 1. Highly pathogenic tropical viruses causing geographically restricted outbreaks with high case fatality rates (BSL4 pathogens Lassa fever virus and Ebola virus). 2. Viruses with a broader and long-term impact on public health affecting a large number of developing countries (Dengue virus and human immunodeficiency virus [HIV]). Methodology includes genetic modification of viruses, cell biology as well as animal experimentation in BSL3 and BSL4 facilities.
