Statements and media communication by BNITM staff

The Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM) is Germany's largest institution for research, care and teaching in the field of tropical diseases and emerging infections. We are scientifically focused on neglected tropical diseases, zoonoses and other infectious diseases with global health impacts. Staff members of the institute do research on pathogens as well as on relevant diseases that are generally not spreading in Germany.

Together, scientists from the fields of parasitology, bacteriology, virology, epidemiology, immunology, clinical research and implementation research try to decipher structures and interactions of pathogens, to control global and local epidemics and to fight poverty-related and neglected diseases.

Although the substantive focus of our work lies in global infection research and less in Germany, we are also involved in projects on infectious diseases in Germany and, in the context of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, we are involved in informing the public and providing policy advice through our expertise. Our task is to advise decision-makers according to our expertise and - as far as possible - to assess the consequences of measures from our professional point of view.
Due to the scientific uncertainties and the resulting need for discussion, we support in principle a well-founded serious discourse in appropriate formats, in which scientific staff of the BNITM also participate and whose scientific expertise in their respective fields we highly appreciate. The content of the statements made by our staff does not necessarily reflect an agreed position of the Institute. This is represented only by the Institute's Executive Board.
