Prof. Dr Marylyn Addo receives Bundesverdienstkreuz

Outstanding achievement in research into emerging infectious diseases

The physician and scientist Prof. Dr Marylyn Addo has been awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany by the Federal President. Addo is head of the Infectiology Section and founding director of the Institute for Infection Research at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) as well as head of the associated department "Clinical Infection Immunology" at the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM). At the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF), she leads and coordinates translational research in the field of emerging infectious diseases, especially viral infections such as Ebola, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), Lassa or Crimean-Congo fever.

At a ceremony in Hamburg City Hall on 25 August 2023, Science Minister Katharina Fegebank awarded her the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany: Addo receives this award for her outstanding medical and scientific achievements in research into infectious diseases such as HIV, Ebola and COVID-19, as well as for her dedicated social commitment. For her involvement in the development of a vaccine against SARS-CoV-2, she has already been awarded the German Medical Award as Physician of the Year in 2020.
